Assam Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria today chaired a meeting with the Chancellor’s nominees of Cotton University who hold responsible positions in the Executive Council, Academic Council, and Court members at the Raj Bhavan.
During the meeting, the Governor shared his vision to standardize and strengthen the governance and functioning of the university for improved academic outcome. During the meeting, the Governor maintained that the nominees for Chancellor should promote and endorse exemplary practices aimed at advancing the cause of higher education.
He also said that the nominees are expected to serve as agents of positive transformation within universities, both in terms of academic and extracurricular achievements.
The Governor underscored the crucial role that the chancellor’s nominees can play in shaping the quality of higher education institutions. He emphasized their significant responsibility in fostering a positive atmosphere within the university, thereby enhancing the efficacy for the betterment of the higher education institutions. The Governor also reiterated the need for the Chancellor’s nominees to advocate best practices and offer constructive suggestions for continuous improvement.
The meeting also discussed a host of issues with regard to administration of Cotton University. The Governor during the meeting also asked the nominees of the Executive Council and Academic Council to carefully examine the selection processes, including the screening of candidates and the constitution of the selection committee.
Advisor to the Chancellor’s Secretariat Prof. Mihir K. Chaudhuri, Commissioner & Secretary to the Governor S. S. Meenakshi Sundaram and other key officials from Raj Bhavan were present at the meeting.
Shillong: The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, takes a monumental step forward in healthcare infrastructure with the launch of a state-of-the-art 10-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Project and Tele-ICU Hub and the inauguration of the 10-bed ICU Ward and Tele-ICU Hub which marks a significant milestone in enhancing critical care services across the region.
The event, held on December 19 at the State Convention Centre, Shillong, brought together key stakeholders, government officials, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to witness the unveiling of this pioneering healthcare initiative. The project aims to address the increasing demand for advanced critical care facilities and to bridge the gap between urban and rural healthcare services, ensuring timely and high-quality medical interventions for patients with severe health conditions.
Distinguished dignitaries in attendance were Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Meghalaya as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya as the Guest of Honour. Shri Donald Philip Wahlang, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, Shri Sampath Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, Dr. Joram Beda, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya and Shri Ramkumar S, IAS, Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya graced the occasion as special guests. Shri Nachiket Mor, Public Health Expert & Scientist, Dr. Sudarshan Hanumappa, Founder, Karuna Trust were also present at the event. Shri Srikanth Nadhamuni, Chairman, 10BedICU, attended the event virtually.
While addressing the gathering, Shri Conrad K Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister, extended his gratitude to all stakeholders who played a crucial role in making this epic ICU project a success. He informed that several ICUs are being launched at certain locations, emphasizing the aim to ensure optimal utility and reach even the most inaccessible regions. “Our project aligns with the vision set five and a half years ago, prioritizing social sectors, with healthcare at the forefront,” he mentioned. He added, “Meghalaya has seen a drastic reduction in Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) from 200+ to 120, reflecting the transformative impact of technology on our healthcare sector. I envision a great future in showcasing how technology can revolutionize healthcare for the entire country.”
The project establishes an interconnected network between the 10-bed ICU Ward and the Tele-ICU Hub, enabling seamless communication and real-time data sharing for better patient outcomes. The 10-bed ICU has state-of-the-art medical facilities, advanced life support systems, and specialized equipment to provide comprehensive critical care services. The Tele-ICU Hub leverages technology to enable remote monitoring and consultation by intensivists and critical care specialists. This innovation ensures that even remote areas can access expert guidance in critical care management.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, stated, “The state of Meghalaya boasts a significant strength in our nursing fraternity. I call upon our nursing staff and doctors to collaborate on this community-involved project. While there may be apprehension about artificial intelligence, today we witness how this technology strengthens our community, especially in healthcare. This initiative reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of our citizens.”
Shri Sampath Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department while addressing the gathering said, “Meghalaya, with its unique challenges, is leveraging technology to address geographical barriers. Our approach involves mobilizing both supply and demand side interventions, working on a lifecycle-based strategy to extend the healthy lifespan of our residents by 10-15 years. In the last three years, we have seen a significant 40% reduction in MMR. The Chief Minister envisions elevating our state to the top ten states in the next 5-10 years. This project is a testament to our commitment to overcoming challenges and improving healthcare accessibility for our people.”
Public Health Expert and Scientist Shri Nachiket Mor highlighted the critical role of healthcare in reaching the last mile and transforming the potential of the state. This initiative reflects the government’s continuous efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and meet the evolving needs of the community. It is a testament to the ongoing efforts to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure and improve health outcomes in Meghalaya.
Maharashtra and Airport Authority of India (AAI) stamped their authority with power-packed performances to clinch the titles of the Yonex-Sunrise 75th Inter State-Inter Zonal Badminton Championships 2023 in the women’s and men’s team events respectively at the RG Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati on Tuesday.
The prestigious national championships organised by Badminton Association of India (BAI), is being held in Assam after four years. The dominant AAI team appeared in both the men’s and women’s team finals and managed to clinch the title in the former category as they outclassed Karnataka 3-0.
Tharun Mannepalli started AAI’s challenge aggressively in the final when he thrashed Bhargav Somasundara 21-18, 21-18 in the opening singles match. Maisnam Meiraba then doubled the lead with a 22-20, 16-21, 21-11 win against Raghu Mariswamy in the second singles contest which lasted nearly an hour.
Later, men’s doubles duo of Alap Mishra-Ravikrishna finished things off in style for AAI as they defeated Prakash Raj-Ashith Surya 21-11, 16-21, 21-19.
Meanwhile in the women’s team event final, Maharashtra dominated AAI 3-0 with impressive displays from Shruti Mundada, Alisha Naik and the doubles pair of Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker.
Mundada started the day for Maharashtra with a hard-fought win 23-21, 23-25, 21-18 over Tanya Hemanth in the opening singles match that lasted for an hour and 23 minutes. The second match also saw intense battle but Naik recovered well in time after losing the second set to secure a 21-18, 12-21, 21-19 victory against Mansi Singh.
Singhi and Thaker then took just 42 minutes to ensure Maharashtra’s position on top of the podium when the duo beat Tanya Hemanth and Priya Devi Konjengbam comfortably with the scores of 21-14, 21-18.
The individual events will kick-off on Wednesday with star shuttlers like BWF World championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen, experienced Sameer Verma, Aakarshi Kashyap, home favourite Ashmita Chaliha among many more vying for the coveted titles. Finals will be played on Sunday.
