More than 1000 boxers from all corners of the nation have converged upon the DTRP Indoor Stadium in Guwahati to partake in the REC Eastern Open Talent Hunt Programme. The event, set to commence from Tuesday and organized in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), and REC Limited under the Ministry of Power, is slated to conclude on March 18.

A breakdown of the participants reveals an impressive roster: Elite men – 431, Elite women – 160, Youth men – 166, and Youth women – 50, with a cumulative total of 807 athletes hailing from approximately 28 states. Notably, the registration process has primarily been conducted online, with over 200 additional boxers opting for offline enrollment, as stated by BFI Secretary General Hemanta Kumar Kalita.

Emphasizing the inclusivity of the initiative, Kalita highlighted that despite its designation as the Eastern Open Talent Hunt Programme, boxers from all regions of the country are welcomed to participate. The tournament serves as a platform for participants to exhibit their prowess and potentially earn invitations to join the trials for inclusion in BFI’s national camps.

Prior to the main event, the junior and sub-junior categories of the programme concluded on Saturday, setting the stage for the upcoming battles of skill and determination among the elite and youth contenders.

The REC Eastern Open Talent Hunt Programme stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of various sporting authorities in nurturing and discovering boxing talents nationwide, reinforcing India’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports.
